School of Dentistry

The School of Dentistry at UMKC houses three main divisions including: Advanced Dental Education, Dental Hygiene and General Dentistry. In addition to students pursuing the Doctoral of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, graduate and undergraduate Dental Hygiene students and students in the Advanced Education certificate programs can receive financial aid.

Any non-DDS students at the School of Dentistry should review financial aid information for undergraduate or graduate students as applies to your level of study. Keep in mind that your department at the School of Dentistry may have other funding opportunities (graduate assistantships or scholarships). Additionally, your Cost of Attendance will reflect special equipment allowances that relate to your program costs.

Financial Aid information for DDS students can be found below.

Overview

UMKC's Doctoral of Dental Surgery (DDS) program is a four-year Professional degree program at the School of Dentistry. DDS students can apply to receive financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year of the program. The School of Dentistry has negotiated exchange agreements with the states of Arkansas, Hawaii, Kansas, and New Mexico to pay the Non-Resident portion of tuition for students who are residents of those states (contact School of Dentistry Admissions for more information). Only students from those states are admitted unless an exception is made by the School of Dentistry Office of Admissions. Therefore, all students in the DDS program pay in-state tuition. For help filling out the FAFSA, read over the FAFSA QuickGuide.

The majority of financial aid received by DDS students is in the form of loans. Below, you can see an example financial aid package received by DDS students (covers a standard Fall-Spring school year):

Years 1-4

$2,000.00 Institutional Loan
$8,500.00 Stafford Subsidized Loan
$32,000.00 Stafford Unsubsidized Loan
$7,000.00 Graduate PLUS Loan
__________
$49,500.00

Students are limited to Health Professional-level loan limits as established by the Department of Education. Additionally, DDS students cannot borrow more than $224,000 in Stafford Loans, including any loans borrowed for other degree programs. Only $65,500 of this can be in the form of Stafford Subsidized Loans.

Scholarships

  • School of Dentistry Scholarships- scholarships are available from the Academic Unit for continuing DDS students (Years 2-4)
  • Private Scholarships- DDS applicants are encouraged to apply for outside/private scholarships. Many students use the website www.fastweb.com to locate private scholarship information. Students can also apply for full-ride scholarships from all branches of the United States military in exchange for an agreement for service, including the National Health Service Corps.

Grants

DDS students are considered Professional students and are not eligible for federal, state, or institutional grants.
